OPEN donates 10,000 € to German charity organisation

Today was all about a charity initiative: Greenman OPEN donated 10,000 € to the organisation Berliner Tafel e.V. With this contribution OPEN wants to support the Tafel, a German charity organisation that helps provide food to people in need. They are currently facing challenges largely due to high inflation and the energy crisis.

The donated amount comes from savings made in energy costs due to the reduction of the Biesdorf Center’s Christmas lights. Besides Biesdorf Center OPEN reduced the number of lights and the time they are lit at various centres, including in North Rhine-Westphalia, Stralsund and Hesse. All savings related to this reduction have been donated to the regional Tafel organisations and saved c. 16.8 tonnes of CO2. OPEN’s commitment to reducing the annual electricity consumption across the whole portfolio by 30% by 2050 is part of its ambitious net-zero targets.

Johnnie Wilkinson, CEO of Greenman says: “As owner and manager of 17 properties in and around Berlin it is our obligation to support social institutions and projects in the capital. In 2021, around 33% of all food production was wasted. The “Tafel Deutschland” organisation fights against food waste and collects unsold but fresh food and distributes it to those in need. In line with our long-term sustainability goals, we are supporting their valuable work with our donation.”
