05 Apr Berlin schoolchildren plant their own garden thanks to the Beezdorf Kitchen educational programme
One of the most powerful solutions to addressing climate change lies in the food we eat. Greenman believes, that educating young people is one of the most sustainable ways of doing that. Less than 25% of children receive “food education” at school and 83% of those that do receive food education are more likely to eat fresh unprocessed foods.
The Beezdorf initiative, organised by our sister company yes&, implements events, activities and competitions in Greenman OPEN’s retail centres and the local schools within the catchment area to promote and educate local school children about healthy and sustainable food production and supply, as well as the importance of bees for biodiversity.
In February, the “Beezdorf Kitchen” was launched, an educational programme organised by our daughter company yes&, hosting an event at Berlin’s Fuchsberg Elementary school together with our agricultural daughter company Potager Farm who provided the school a mini-replica of a vertical farm in which the children planted their own seedlings.
Last week, the initiative went into a successful second round. The workshop involved six classes ranging from 1st to 6th grade, and a total of 67 children participated in planting the school’s own garden beds with vegetables and herbs. The children were highly enthusiastic about planting nine high beds and watering young shrubs, fruit trees, seeds, Mediterranean spices and many more.
After the successful planting of the school garden, the children from grade 6 had the chance to harvest the lettuce planted in the vertical farm at the last event and eat it with a healthy dressing for lunch. Even though some of the children were hesitant to eat anything green before the event, they were all excited to try the fresh salad in the end. This demonstrates how much the younger generation enjoys learning about gardening and healthy eating and how educational initiatives like the Beezdorf Kitchen contribute to increase awareness of sustainability and healthy food production.
It is heartening to see that the Beezdorf Kitchen is making a positive impact on the community and inspiring the next generation to live a healthy lifestyle.
