Digitalisation: EDEKA are very focused on start-up technology in stores such as smart trolleys, app development and self-scanning checkouts.
Kaufland 
Kaufland is part of the Schwarz Group – Europe’s largest retailer in 2022 and Germany’s third largest full assortment food retailer with a total revenue in 2022 of c. €21bn and c. 700 stores across Germany.
Focus: Improving shopper experience with new store concepts and a sustainable range.
Digitalisation: The Schwarz Group acquired Real.de in June 2020, one of the largest online marketplaces in Germany offering both food and non-food products.
REWE
REWE is Germany’s second largest full assortment food retailer with a total revenue in 2022 of c. €51bn and over 6,000 stores across Germany.
Focus: On multichannel strategies including convenience, discount, online and click & collect.
Digitalisation: REWE is Germany’s leading online supermarket for fresh food, serving c. 70% of the market. They offer same-day delivery to 8 German cities.
Aldi
ALDI is Germany’s largest food discounter with the group’s (Aldi Nord & Aldi Süd) total revenue in 2021 amounting to c. €36bn and c. 4,500 stores across Germany.
Focus: On a limited range at discount prices. Aldi are now remodelling their concept to include an expanded fresh category and bakery section improving perception of quality and freshness.
Digitalisation: Aldi do not trade online in Germany.
