Transforming Stadtgalerie Datteln: Sustainability in Retail Redevelopment

OPEN is actively investing in EU-Taxonomy-compliant net-zero buildings. This initiative reflects our commitment to making our properties future-proof while making a positive impact on the environment.

A leading example of this strategy is the extensive revitalisation of our retail centre Stadtgalerie Datteln, where we have recognised the opportunity to approach this project not merely as renovation but rather as a chance to promote sustainability in the region and enhance the quality of life for the community. A key aspect of this redevelopment is securing a new grocery anchor tenant for the centre. We are currently in advanced discussions with one of Germany’s leading full-range grocers to be considered as a potential tenant for the centre. The transformation of the asset also includes the opening of the centre for an enhanced connectivity with the marketplace and pedestrian zone, that will have positive effects on the local community and increase the city’s attractiveness as a residential and shopping destination.

Construction is planned to start in July 2024 and is expected to be completed by the second quarter of 2025. We are collaborating closely with the architectural company Rathke Architekten BDA from Wuppertal, with whom Greenman OPEN has had a longstanding successful partnership. Our shared goal is to transform and optimise the existing building to establish a sustainable foundation. Through innovative concepts, energy measures, and the creation of high-quality urban qualities, we contribute to the sustainable redevelopment of the existing building and the transformation of the city centre of Datteln.

Upon completion, the building will receive a DGNB Gold certification as well as EU-Taxonomy verification. These certifications are evidence of our commitment to the highest environmental standards and demonstrate our commitments to Paris-aligned net-zero goals. The investment sum for this project is in the double-digit million range, underscoring our confidence in the long-term value of this project.
